What is jackfruit?

Jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world! According to Guinness world records, the heaviest jackfruit weighed in at 94 pounds!

Where is jackfruit grown?

Jackfruit grows in tropical and subtropical parts of the world such as India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Central, and Eastern Africa, the Caribbean, Florida, Brazil, Australia, Puerto Rico, and many Pacific Islands.

Jackfruit is the national fruit of Bangladesh!

 



Is jackfruit healthy for you?

Jackfruit provides nearly every nutrient you need including folates, niacin, riboflavin, potassium, and magnesium. It is a great source of vitamin C, and iron, and is one of the few fruits that's high in B vitamins.

Jackfruit contains phytonutrients that fight against a long list of diseases including cancer, hypertension, ulcers, and inflammation.

It is also packed with fiber and protein! Each bag of Jacked! Jackfruit Jerky contains 5g of protein and 8g of fiber. Our jerky has zero cholesterol and is low in fat!

 

Is Jackfruit Sustainable?

Jackfruit is very environmentally friendly and is a more sustainable alternative to the meat that traditional jerky is made of and even the soy bases that most plant-based products use.

Jackfruit does not require pesticides or herbicides and doesn't even need irrigation to grow!

It has a very low carbon footprint and only requires 116 gallons of water to produce one pound of fruit whereas beef requires 1,847 gallons to produce the same amount!

Jackfruit is a shade crop that can be intergrown with other crops to create a regenerative ecosystem. The jackfruit tree is a perennial so it doesn't require constant replanting, and it requires relatively little care once established.

That means that it helps both the land it’s grown on and the farmers that play a crucial role in harvesting the fruit!

Why use jackfruit in a jerky product?

jackfruit has great benefits for both your health and the planet, but just as importantly, when combined with our rich flavors, it tastes amazing!

We decided that jackfruit serves as the perfect base for our jerky, as it best allows our flavors to shine, and when dried, has a texture that we found most similar to that of meat jerky.

Jackfruit vs. Durian

The Durian is commonly known as the world's smelliest fruit. Jackfruit and Durians are from different families but have a lot in common.

Jackfruit has more bumps rather than thorns that you would find on a Durian. Jackfruit smells like bubble gum, pineapple, and banana whereas a Durian has a pungent smell similar to dirty socks.

Durian is very soft on the inside which can make it difficult to replicate meat. Jackfruit is more fiberous.

They both are loaded with nutrients. Jackfruit has more protein and Durian is higher in fats and carbs.

Durian is commonly banned from public buildings and transportation in countries like Thailand and Singapore due to it's pungent smell!


Unripe vs. Ripe Jackfruit

Jackfruit is used in two ways; ripe and unripe. We use the unripe version of jackfruit because it remains neutral in flavor, allowing us to add our own seasoning to it!

 

What can I cook with jackfruit?

Indian dishes use jackfruit in curries.

Carribean countries tend to make curried jackfruit recipes.

Americans have started to use jackfruit as a meat substitute in pulled pork sandwiches.
